John Brown's Body Lies A-Molderin' in His Grave: April 22, 2015

A reminder:

Tomorrow is the last team time opportunity you will have to retake your vocab quiz from the Era of Change.

The.
Last.
Time.

When you leave the building on Friday, you leave behind your last chance to retake this quiz.  Please plan accordingly!

If you need help studying, check the links from this week for review materials.
Now that we got that out of the way…..

JOHN BROWN.

Today, we are starting or continuing to look at our evidence about John Brown, to decide if he was a martyr, a hero, or a terrorist.

HOMEWORK due FRIDAY:  You are writing a speech to the jury to convince them that Brown was a martyr, a hero, or a terrorist, and to ask them to punish (or forgive) him accordingly.  This is a longer-than-usual assignment, so please make sure you plan accordingly.  The effort level on homework has dropped recently (not uncommon in the spring), but this is one assignment you cannot just phone in.

Pre-Civil War Continues: April 21, 2015

Hi everyone,
Most classes are wrapping up the lecture/partner discussion activity about compromises before the Civil War.  Some classes moved onto John Brown and the raid on Harper's Ferry today as well; the rest of you will get there tomorrow.

There is no NEW homework, so if you missed completing last night's homework, please get that done. It is linked under yesterday's post.  Obviously, this is a great time to study for a retake of the vocab assessment, if you want to revisit that assignment.  Have a great rest of your day, and we'll see you tomorrow!

Back to Business: April 20, 2015

Welcome back to your regularly scheduled programming!  You guys were very well behaved last week, and we thank you for your flexibility and responsiveness.  Plus, it didn't hurt that we got to get a lot of outside time in the sunshine! :)

Today in class, we continued with our "Disunion" lesson.  If you have missed any of this, please see me to get handouts.  I will post the PowerPoint when we are done with directions about what to do.  Until then, just join in with us in class.

HOMEWORK:  Tonight, you have a handout of primary sources about slavery - it has a number of short readings and questions.  If you lost the handout, there is a link below.

Slavery document

ALSO, if you want to revisit your ERA OF CHANGE VOCABULARY ASSESSMENT, it is *your* job to come to my team time or see me during your study hall to make up the assessment.

  • If you retake the assessment, your NEW grade will replace your OLD grade, regardless of what that is.
  • If you forget to take the assessment before break, the old grade stands.
Below is a link to the online flash card site that you can use to help you study.

This Is Only A Test: April 15, 2015

More testing today, which means I didn't see four of the five classes, and you have no new homework.  Please check PowerSchool, as I am using this time to catch up on grading. If you think you did something for which you have not received credit, PLEASE check YOUR papers first to see if, maybe, you forgot to turn it in.  Then see me to check out the nameless wonders that always pop up in the mix.  Then, and only then, should you ask me about the assignment.  Thanks!

Testing, 1, 2, 3….April 14, 2015

Hey Team 12!
Our first day of testing went (relatively) smoothly, I thought - or anyway, it could have been much, MUCH worse!  Thank you for your patience and your self-control - it makes everything so much easier!

In class today, if I had your class, I started a lecture/activity lesson on compromises around the Civil War.  If you weren't here, get the handouts from me as soon as you can, and we will summarize what you missed.  There is no new homework tonight.

Slavery In Modern Times: April 13, 2015

Today in class, we talked about slavery in its modern form.  As much as we may want to believe that slavery is a practice we've left well in our past, the fact is, it is still alive and very present in the global economy.

If you missed class, you may want to watch the video we saw so you'll know what we discussed.

We are testing this week, so it is going to be challenging to keep track of which classes you've had and which ones you've skipped.  I will make sure this blog reflects which classes we saw on which days, and I will try to be as clear as possible about what I've assigned and what needs to be done.  Good luck,  keep your sense of humor, and if you get confused, just ask!

On the Telegraph Line: April 7, 2015

You guys did well overall on your Era of Change vocab quiz.  That's good, because you can use that learning on tomorrow's writing assessment!

After you finished your quiz today, you had a chance to do a review activity with the "telegram writing" assignment.  I've attached it to help you review if you need to

More Fun with Vocab! April 2, 2015

Today in class, you worked with your topic groups to identify what you think are the most important words about your topic that EVERYONE will be held responsible for knowing.  I will collect those across the classes and use your votes to decide which terms you need to know.  Then, I will give you a vocab list with definitions so you can study.

HOMEWORK:  Next, we did a run-through example of the homework you are going to do tonight. The directions are:

  • Choose a vocab term from your list.  Put the term in the center oval.
  • Define the term IN YOUR OWN WORDS.  You may look up definitions, but then you need to restate them in words that make sense to you!
  • Synonyms/related words - if there is another way to say your same word, write that here.  If there isn't an exact synonym, write down words that have similar meanings.
  • Antonyms/opposites - write down terms that are UNLIKE your central word.
  • Explain how the word is related to your TOPIC (westward movement, immigration, industrialization).
If worse comes to worse, complete AS MUCH OF THE WEB as you can.  I have put a picture of our sample web below, along with some tips and suggestions:
